1986 Flood relief

Vanavasi Vikas Kendra, Boorgampahad, Khammam District, Andhra Pradesh - 507 206 Boorgampahad is about 5 Km from the famous temple city Bhadrachalam, on the banks of river Godavari. Apart from the famous temple, Bhadrachalam is also known for Hotwater springs in Gundala Village (about 5 km away), Parna Sala (believed to be the place where Lord Sri Rama stayed with Sita Devi), Sabari (the old tribal lady in the epic Ramayana, who offered fruits to Lord Shri Rama). There is also a big river Sabari which merges with the river Godavari in Kunavaram, about 40 Km from Bhadrachalam.

In the recent history people from this region witnessed masive floods in the year 1986. So many villages were immersed under water for several weeks. During this time volunteers from RSS participated in lots of Sewa programmes. 400 RSS volunteers stayed in Bhadrachalam for a month to take part in relief work. During this time, with the help of local community, Bhadrachalam Papaer Boards Ltd. (known as BPL) and Lions Club, a 1800 Sq.ft flood relief shelter was built. This is popularily known as "Bharathi Bhavan", which has 6 rooms.

In addition to being used as a flood relief shelter, Bharathi Bhavan is accomodating 42 poor children from the neighbouring tribal villages. Vanavasi Vikas Kendra is sponsoring these children, so as to make them responsible and proud citizens of India. There is lots of moral, economical and physical support for these young children from the village community. Currently the focus is to provide good education to these children with a strong sense of national unity. We are also trying to shape these children as future sportsmen and intellectuals of a new and strong India. Bharathi Bhavan Thanks all of you for turning a remote village into a tribal development center. We thank the local community and leadership for encouraging us to take-up this inspiring task of helping our tribal community.

If you want to help us, please schedule an appointment with us to visit the hostel. This will be a moral booster for our children. If you want to donate towards this center, please make your cheques payable to "Seva Bharati, Vijayawada" and post them to the above address. All donations are Income-tax free with 80(G) facility in India.
